This week's Illustration Friday assignment is "Smoke". I spent the last two weekends raking leaves and burning some of them in my fire pit. Gus and Rosie helped....as you can see! I took some artistic liberty in a few areas. First of all I drew myself thinner....it is my drawing after all! Secondly....my dreams of summer days are wisping away....just like the smoke. Last week my boat went into storage and that is sad for me. I dream about the days I was on the water so..............I took another liberty and didn't draw my back yard but the lake in the background. "Smoke" is an interesting metaphor don't you think? I had a lot of leaves and I did a lot of thinking while I watched them burn. At first I thought this drawing was going to be for last week's assignment which was "Wind". But something in me didn't feel it quite right for the assignment and I didn't finish it. I was pretty shocked when this week's assignment was smoke and then knew I had to get the color into the drawing and finish it up. Smoke to me represents a powerful change and it is about letting go when you are in a situation that needs to change. I watched the smoke rise into the air...flowing with the wind, curling up and away. It felt therapeutic. We all have to practice letting go....Smoke is kind of like that...forceful at first...then billowing and beautiful....letting go....letting change happen.
