Do you remember the song, "California Dreaming"? It is drifting through my mind this morning and it happens to be snowing here in Franksville, WI. I don't start work until two this afternoon so I was looking at some old photos...and thought I'd share these with you.
I found them in my father's old paperwork. I am pretty sure they are pictures of his mother and her siblings when they were children. I have no idea what the uniforms are all about. The photos remind me the old photo booths that were in the dime stores. We put our quarters in the machine, would rush into the booth, and pose with our friends...(all crammed into the tiny little space). Four flashes from behind the glass signaled when we were finished. Then we'd spill out and wait for the sound of grinding gears to stop and the machine would spit out a long narrow strip of four pictures. It smelled of strong chemicals. No matter how hard we tried to be composed...someone was always immortalized in a split second change of poses or else the curtain behind us was captured in disarray. That was as close to magic as we got....that and fireflies. Now we have magic all around us....fax machines, computers, cell phones and internet access. Every now and then I like to take some of the old things and play with them....like these photos. We didn't have all the distractions of texting etc and I need my quiet spaces sometimes. On one of those days I was playing around with copies of these photos and glued them to different sorts of labels, tabs and disks. I brought them with me to my daughter's house and we made this little pretend wash line for fairies....just for fun. It made a silly little memory time. I remember Jake looking out of the window and chuckling at us as we sat on the ground photographing this ....
Magic...it comes in special moments...in special ways...like big fluffy snowflakes when I am "California Dreaming". We have to be careful not to miss them.
